Beeswax in a jar with a lid. Beeswax is traditionally used by tailors to strengthen the thread when hand sewing buttonholes. Keep it near the sewing machine and pull your thread through it a few times before cutting the end of the thread and it so easy to get the stiff, neat end through the machine's needle.
